Why are the architypes of Scottish architecture so prevalent and so resilient? Are they perennially relevant or have we exhausted their potential? As architects and designers we are continually faced with the challenges of new and old, innovation and tradition, local and universal: “life can only be understood by looking backward; but it must be lived looking forward” - can we find compatibility between techniques of the past and technologies of the future?

As an evolutionary phenomenon, do these archetypes reflect an architectural culture confident in its history, or are they symptomatic of insularity? As the (R)Evolution takes form is this a phase related to passing notions of identity, or does the climate crisis make the archetype more pertinent than ever?

Moxon Architects are delighted to be hosting an afternoon and evening event from our home at Quarry Studios in Aberdeenshire. Beyond the Bothy will be a roundtable discussion centred on the role and relevance of Scottish Archetypes, featuring some of Scotland’s key contemporary practitioners. This will be followed by an evening of drinks and a rooftop BBQ, catered by our neighbour and sister company Tarmachan.
