This practice of engagement is a part of Feysa Poetry's PhD research, Dismantling the Mistress's House, at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Her project involves establishing and directing a community-based museum that voices women's role in safeguarding their heritage through domestic practices in Lasem, Java. Working alongside Lasem Heritage Foundation, both she and the museum are currently funded by LPDP. Learn more about the research on the link below:

A dish once prepared in a courtyard kitchen in Lasem, a port town in Java, now arrives at your door-- folded into a handwritten note, accompanied by frozen fragments of its past. The re:cipe is part of a living archive from Museum Nyah Lasem, a community museum that keeps memory alive through objects, stories, and the mundane rituals of home.

You are invited to cook it, not to re:plicate, but to re:interpret. To trace its steps, stray from them, question them. To re:spond with what your own kitchen allows. Through this act, memory is not only re:constructed, but re:imagined.

Let your hands translate it. Let your home iterate it. Let your taste buds record it.

Document your version however you wish: a journal entry, a photograph, a sketch, a spill of thought on your note, a direct edit on the re:cipe. These responses will form a collective archive of adaptations, exchanges, and the quiet intimacy of cooking across distance.

By booking a ticket before 7 June 2025, you will be sent a package via post, containing:

  • A handwritten re:cipe from Lasem’s community archive.
  • Frozen ingredients to make the dish.

We ask of you, by re:plying to the call to:

  • Make the dish, in your own way, at your own home.
  • Re:flect, re:cord, re:spond.
  • Re:turn your documentation through online submission by 14 June 2025.

Together, these entries will form a shared table-- an intimate, transnational conversation told through kitchens and memories, which will be compiled as an online zine and sent to you by the end of Architecture Fringe.
