The Messenger by Hilary Jack comprises four site-specific works in the landscape, made in response to the rich history of Mellerstain House, its architecture and the fascinating characters who lived there. From a bold, large-scale neon text piece overlooking the lake, and a looming look out tower from which smoke gently rises, to Hermes’ long-missing caduceus playfully replaced with an anomalous staff, this exhibition draws out hidden histories and weaves in a commentary on contemporary events.
