This public discussion accompanies the exhibition Alternative Domesticities, which presents contemporary photographs and drawings of three experimental housing projects across the central belt of Scotland, all constructed during the 1960s: Cuthill Housing in Prestonpans, Park 3 West in Cumbernauld, and Southfield Housing in Barnton.

After an introduction, each speaker will talk briefly about their perspective on these projects, and their significance within their research and practice. These perspectives shall complement and contextualise the exhibited images and drawings, widening the consideration of the work. After these presentations, the conversation will be opened to the public, with an open and wide-ranging discussion of the three projects encouraged.

Dr Alistair Fair is Chancellor's Fellow of Architectural History at the University of Edinburgh. He specialises in twentieth-century architecture in Britain, and has recently co-published Building Modern Scotland, a comprehensive study of the New Towns programme in Scotland between 1947-1997

Fiona McLachlan is Professor of Architectural Practice at Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. As a director of E & F McLachlan Architects, she was involved in the construction of several architecturally significant social housing projects in and around Edinburgh.
