In Tongues is a research project and instillation conducted by Umarell as part of the Architecture Fringe Festival 2025.
Whether consciously or subconsciously the language we use is a reflection on power and position. Discourse around the built environment is no exception to this rule and our word choices can either encourage or undermine new voices. The conversations that shape our cities should be easily accessible to all, however, the language we use to discuss architecture can be complex, often purposefully so.
This project explores the role of language in architecture and how it frequently maintains a level of exclusivity within the profession. We will examine word choice in architectural speech and writing, creating our own works that reflect the impact language has on how we engage with built environments. The aim is to consider how we as architects engage with each other and the wider public, moving towards a relationship with language that is more open and approachable.
Umarell is a collective and same titled publication that focuses on highlighting under-represented and radical architecture and placemaking. We want to create an accessible but not dumbed down architecture that extends the reaches of architectural practice beyond what is the norm to many.
