This exhibition presents urban narrative landscapes made up of images, texts, and objects from two different cities – Glasgow and East Tokyo – where so-called “scrap and build” culture changes the landscape every day. The project also invites visitors to create a new narrative in the space between translations through reading, translating, and rewriting two cities.
The exhibition will present photos and texts by myself and other contributors about cities, memory, and the experience of daily urban living, together with photos and texts submitted by exhibition visitors. These will be installed in the space as well as in on-site books that form part of the installation – a spatial ‘narrative landscape’ that reflects the variety of stories within these two cities. I will also produce and present a zine that compiles these materials.
How do we orient ourselves in a world that is being homogenized by global capitalism and information networks? Through an exchange of narratives between the localities of Glasgow and East Tokyo, new narratives may emerge that reveal how many of us – although each in our own local places and situations – share similar questions and dilemmas. From these shared subjective impressions we can begin to imagine new future possibilities where hope can be found.
I invite visitors to please contribute photographs that I will print and add into the installation as well as to share their stories in blank books that will be included in the space.
